On assignment for Getty Images I was part of the team covering the City Three Peaks Challenge which involved participants abseiling down three of Londons’ tallest and most recognisable buildings, The Gherkin, The Cheese-grater and The Walkie Talkie. I was lucky enough to be working at the top of the Cheese-grater to capture the tension of those before and as they begin descending these heights. Most commonly people questioned “Why am I doing this” as the ropes were fitted to their harness rig. I found myself stifling my giggles as I captured their nerves, I wasn’t being unkind but that's how I react when I can totally relate to that nervous rush brought on by adrenaline.
Being roped in and standing in a splayed position on scaffolding for extra height to capture their departures had its own challenge, but thanks to the professionalism of Ropesmiths Cubby, Paul & Bill I felt surprisingly confident up there. What struck me most was how attentive people were whilst being instructed, people are so easily distracted in day to day situations and many aren't listening but waiting for their opportunity to talk, this was understandably a moment for focus, but people look different when they are genuinely listening, they examine your face to absorb your delivery, manner and minor inclinations with forensic scrutiny.

It was the 70th Anniversary of VJ Day and the Royal family were attending a number of engagements. I was assigned to cover the service at St Martin in-the-fields Church, which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh attended as well as the Prime Minister David Cameron. Following the morning service I made my way to my second engagement, which was to photograph a Reception hosted by the Royal British Legion for all the Veterans at the College Garden of Westminster Abbey, which Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall would meet Veterans and their families.
The Royal couple split up in order to meet as many Veterans as possible, so I had to split my time with each in order to get a good image of their interaction with the guests. Typically as I was photographing Prince Charles, a Press officer informed me that the Duchess was dancing with a Veteran, this sent alarm bells through me, because this is potentially a Great picture at what had been quite a static event and I’m missing it, however no image would be worth me rushing or moving recklessly and bumping into a Veteran, I’m 6ft 4 and don’t miss many meals so I have to be conscious of that fact in a crowded place and respect those around me rather than pursue a picture where the moment may already be lost……. Luckily as I move across the room in a controlled fashion I can see that Royal Navy Veteran Jim Booth (94) was not going to let his Royal dance partner off the hook until the tune was over, I arrived to snatch 7 or 8 frames, three of which were good and caught the spirit of the reception.

BBC2’s 500 Words competition has inspired thousands of young minds to put pen to paper and has won support from one royal listener. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, a self confessed fan of Wogan, complimented DJ Chris Evans on this project and breakfast show. Chris Evans is just unstoppable, boundless in energy, full of idea’s and completely focussed and someone who just cant stand still. The final for the competition was held at St James’ Palace by invitation of the Duchess and hosted live by DJ Evans in a feel good pacey production.
Chelsea Flower Show is the opening of the Summer season for me, whilst it’s technically in Spring it is the beginning of sunny outdoor jobs, except this year it was un-typically wet and overcast. It’s an early start because you want to find your feet and shoot any interesting displays before any potential star attendance. It’s fair to say I was half asleep as I arrived but miraculously noticed a little bustle towards the rear of a garden. On my approach it became clear Prince Harry was taking a look at his charities’ Sentebale garden. A little burst of adrenaline set me into action and I was fortunate to shadow his informal tour unchallenged picking off a few moments. This pic really demonstrates his warm personality as he engages an exhibitor.
I was lucky enough to get exclusive access to an ‘Audience with Al Pacino’ - It only really hit home when I arrived that this was a special opportunity as the man is one of the few living icons of film as the showreel revealed in an edit of his classic work. He hit the stage with energy and animation which is just as well as I had only five minutes before that familiar tap on the shoulder signifying “You're done”, however this moment of reflection was my favorite pic from the night.

Some old school friends have reformed their 6th Form Rugby side, they were a successful team and enjoyed a great team spirit, so 20 years on they've laced up their boots and popped in their gum shields to see if they've still got it. This is no lark in the park, these guys have trained together, worked on movement, handling, scrums, mauls and manoeuvres, each has made inroads in their fitness individually to enable them to perform somewhere near their old standard, they know the knocks will be harder than they remember and they definiteley want to do themselves justice. Sure there is a good drink afterwards, but this re-union is for the love of the game, the rivalry and friendship it's given them. I pitched up not having shot a great deal of sport, minutes before kick off and a little unprepared with my 6year old son slightly off message with a football at his feet, but I feel there is a feature here and I hope I can return for the next game, idea's a plenty.

PHEW It's been busy! February is London's best month in Entertainment & Fashion. Covering London Fashion Week, The Elle Style Awards and The Brit Awards with a sprinkling of other jobs such as premieres and photo-calls takes its toll, but it's a period you have to embrace and try to get the best from. I've previously shot London Fashion Week for the Drinks Sponsor 'BeautyIn' which had its own challenges but wasn't nearly as demanding as covering it editorially for Getty Images. London Fashion Week by it's very nature is an intense frenzied celebration of British Fashion. There are just so many shows in various venues, it's all hands to pumps, it is the one event that attracts a wide variety of people with such differing reasons to be there, You might say some with unjustifiable reasons, I couldn't possibly comment, LFW is a victim of its own success.
The Elle Style Awards is one of the most Glamorous events we have in the UK, access to shoot this event is the HOT-TICKET because the attendees are a mixture of the UK's most 'On trend' celebs and visiting A-list glamour. I get frustrated with guests because it seems they are determined not too smile, attempting sultry and seductive but often not managing either, I know I can't and I've tried. I guess I'm just a cheesy guy and a sucker for an honest smile.
Being slow to pack up has its uses as Simon Cowell arrived late with Lauren Silverman, I frantically scrambled some kit together just as the couple playfully kissed for the few remaining cameras. It's the only time I've snapped Mr Cowell with partner Lauren and his demeanour is much warmer in her company.
The Brit Awards has a rich history of raucous behaviour and there is always a headline grabbing incident, this year Madonna's wardrobe malfunction was less titillating more titter-making. My assignment was to shoot the Sony Music after party, it's a late night and you just don't know if the guests will be in the mood for more pictures because the Brits is so demanding media wise and the Artists just want to relax. But this time it went well, Paloma Faith won Best Female and Rita Ora was in the party mood, but you have to know when to leave them to it.
